Question: What is play by post?
Answer: Play by post is a format of play based on forum posting. You write your character's actions in a period of time --usually a turn-- into a post, then wait for the other players to respond to your post. This method of storytelling can take some time, usually about a day a post, sometimes more, depending on everyone's schedule. Remember to post frequently and be patient, everyone has a life outside the site and quality takes time.
Question: How do I play?
Answer: Your storyteller(ST) will set the scene, what is going on and what is around your characters. They might include context clues; such as prior motivations and events to help set the start of the story.
It is your job to describe your characters actions in a given period of time(if your in battle, usually a turn of combat, if not, enough time to react to what is happening around you, and to perform your own action), then wait for the other members in the thread to respond in kind. If you don’t know when it is appropriate to respond(such as with threads with large groups of players), a simple guide is;
During tense conflicts --like combat or a chase-- post once a turn, when the ST/ initiative leader pushes to the next turn, then post again. If your unsure, if everyone is rolling dice, then it might be wise to make sure your not taking extra turns(your ST will let you know, it’s no big deal we are all adults here.)
In less tense situations post in response to someone else interacting with you(asking you a question, handing you something, or giving you a piece of information for you to act on) or when the ST pushes the scene forword.
Try to post at least once a day, and when you post remember that you respond what happened to you, but you also act yourself. Don’t just let people push you around, make your own choices.
Question: What books do you use for each line?
Answer: We use all 2e materials, and a smattering of homebrew listed here on the forum. If you don't see something listed, or have questions, let one of the admins know!
Question: Who do I call to start playing?
Answer:Your best bet to start playing is to just post a character sheet in the appropriate venue, and PM the ST for that venue: ArchonAres and vonRiva for Beast, IblardoraKoiko and vonRiva for Vampire, Juhn for Demon, and IblardoraKoiko and sleepychicken for mage, vonRiva for Promethean.
Question: Is Cedar City based off the real Cedar City, Utah?
Answer: Sort of. The geographical location is true, but we’ve increased the size of the city, added our own places and NPCs, and generally made it into a bit of a mini Mormon Vegas.
Question: Can I have multiple characters?
Answer: Absolutely. We do prefer you make sure you can hold the characters you have before you spread yourself too thin, but by all means- you can have as many characters in as many venues as you like
Question: Can I bring a character from home?
Answer: Your more than welcome to port characters to Cedar City, just run your backstory with us so we can make sure they fit the world we’re building. Also, you start with 0XP.
Question: Social scenes, Plot scenes and glimpses; what’s the difference?
Answer: Social scenes are for groups of people getting together, talking, and generally just having fun. In these scenes we like to minimize/eliminate rolling. If something happens in a social scene that makes it ‘more’, we’ll generally branch it off into a new thread, where it becomes a ‘plot’ scene. Plot scenes are were things happen. Personal plot, venue metaplot, and sitewide metaplot all count for plot scenes. Glimpses are the outlier, because they are a ‘glimpse’ into the life of your PC. It can be anything from personal history you want to write out to feeding, to spending time with a personal NPC. Glimpses are single post events, and can involve two people writing together.
For xp purposes, you can get as many beats from glimpses per month as you like, but you’ll generally only be in one plot thread or social thread a month. We try to run social threads regularly, and are going to try for semi-regular crossover threads as well, but if you have an idea for a social thread, just run it by your ST and they’ll get you started!
Question: Some lines uses willpower per action, some use willpower per scene. Which do we do?
Answer: It depends on the action you’re using. Read the line of the ability/skill/power/merit you’re using. If you aren’t sure, ask an ST!
Question: How do Chapters work? Stories? Chronicles?
Answer: Each Plot Thread is considered a Chapter, with a stated goal for each thread demarcating where a thread ends. Stories are a series of Stated goals that lead up to a larger goal, and equally your Chronicles are a series of Larger goals that make up your time in our City.
For instance Pandora, a Mage, wants to rule the underworld. They know that to do so they must first earn the respect of the big bosses of the underworld. To do that they need to build their rep. So they come up with plans to pull a heist. They plan and then execute the heist.
Their Chronicle at this time is ruling the underworld through negotiation, their story is earning rep via a heist, Their chapters are planning and executing the heist.
